Welcome

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We welcome you to register for the upcoming International Conference on Burnout (ICOB) for Medical Doctors. The conference is scheduled from Saturday, 25th – Sunday, 26th July 2020 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

The idea for the conference conceptualized when Burnout was updated in the same category as in ICD-11 by WHO in May 2019. The new update of the definition brings greater clarity and urgency of Burnout as an occupational phenomenon. However, as WHO continues to embark on the development of evidence-based guidelines on wellbeing in the workplace, there is significant vagueness, denial and misunderstanding of Burnout within the medical community. With this in mind ICOB was established, to educate medical professionals – as a top-down approach on severe issues of Burnout.

The conference program will include faculty presenting the following on Burnout:

  • Contributors, consequences and occupational hazards of Burnout affecting the medical community.
  • The association of self-perceived medical errors with clinicians quality of life, burnout, depression, and empathy.
  • Breaking dogma on mental health: SA’s silence over high stress, suicide and burnout among medical professionals.
  • Moral, ethical and personal challenges physicians face when caring for others.
  • Existing South African Wellbeing Programs for medical professionals.
  • Explore evidence based systems to measure Burnout.
    • Evaluate approaches to prevent and reduce burnout
    • Panel Discussion with key stakeholders: An urgent call to evaluate workable solutions to prevent Burnout with Medical Professionals.

We look forward to your attendance and valued contribution by exchanging meaningful dialogue and learning how to implement workable solutions to mitigate burnout with medical professionals.

Warm regards,

ICOB 2020 Local Organising Committee
